Visitors to the Polly Hill Arboretum, a public garden in West Tisbury, will discover a classic Vineyard landscape that retains its connection to the past. For over 300 years this property has been shaped by Island history. What began as a 1670s colonial homestead became a sheep farm in the 1850s and by the 1920s a summer residence for Polly Hill’s family. Open meadows, crisscrossing stone walls, and old farmstead buildings harmonize with the land. The landscape began to take on its current form in 1958 as Polly Hill began planting an arboretum (a garden of trees and shrubs) from seed. Today this “living museum” is home to a collection of more than 1,600 exceptional plants. Features include Polly’s Play Pen, the dogwood allée, and the national stewartia collection. These highlights, and unusual trees such as the monkey puzzles and big leaf magnolia delight young and old alike. While gardeners are sure to have a special interest in the Arboretum, all visitors are rewarded with the timeless quality of the landscape: our unique sense of place. Grounds are open year round, sunrise to sunset. Tours are offered in-season, everyday at 10am. For more information call 508-693-9426 or visit
